Alex Kerner's mother was in a coma while the Berlin wall fell. When she wakes up he must try to keep her from learning what happened (as she was an avid communist supporter) to avoid shocking her which could lead to another heart attack.
The film treats the end of East Germany as a warm tragicomedy in which a lie told out of love keeps growing and growing. The tone moves between slapstick and quiet wistfulness without turning cynical. Behind the gags sits real nostalgia for a country that no longer exists.
Good for you if you like humor with heart and want German history seen through everyday life.
