Couchmood suggests films and series that fit your taste and shows where they stream right now. No account, set up in a minute.
Some shows are worth watching because everyone is talking about them right now. Others are still being talked about more than ten years later, because they do something very few shows manage. Breaking Bad belongs to the second kind. Here is why, without giving anything away.
What it is about
Walter White teaches chemistry in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is brilliant at his subject but earns too little to live well, and works a second job at a car wash. Then he is diagnosed with cancer. To provide for his family, he teams up with Jesse Pinkman, a former student, and starts making methamphetamine.
That is the setup of the first episode. What becomes of it is the real reason to watch.
The character changes, not just the situation
Many shows keep their lead character the same and throw a new problem at them every week. Breaking Bad does the opposite. Creator Vince Gilligan once described his goal, roughly, as turning Mr. Chips into Scarface. So the show tells a transformation, step by step, and you are there for every step.
It works because each of Walter's decisions feels understandable in the moment. You catch yourself rooting for him, and two episodes later you wonder how it came to this. That friction between rooting for someone and feeling uneasy carries the show across five seasons.
Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul
Before Breaking Bad, many people knew Bryan Cranston as the chaotic dad from the sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. Here he plays a man who starts quietly and takes up more and more space. He won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series four times for the role. Aaron Paul won the Emmy for Supporting Actor three times as Jesse.
The two carry the show together. Walter and Jesse are not a duo who get along, but two people who cling to each other even though they would be better off apart. Many of the strongest scenes are simply two people in a room, talking.

Slow at first, on purpose
An honest note: the first season has only seven episodes and takes a while to get going. It was cut short by the Hollywood writers' strike of 2007 and 2008. If you have doubts after three episodes, stick with it. From the second season on the threads start to connect, and by the third you notice that very little here happens by chance.
That makes a rewatch almost better than the first time: small details from early episodes gain weight later.
How it looks
Breaking Bad looks different from most crime shows. Wide desert shots, long takes, time-lapses over New Mexico and colours used with intent. Many episodes open with a short scene that only makes sense later. That keeps the tension up without something exploding every few minutes.
Who Breaking Bad is for
You like stories in which characters change in a believable way.
You do not mind violence that is rare but clear when it comes.
You want a show with a real ending: after five seasons and 62 episodes, the story is told.
It is less suited to evenings when you want something on in the background. Breaking Bad wants you to pay attention.
What comes next
Once you are through, there are two ways to stay in this world. tells the backstory of the lawyer Saul Goodman and is a show in its own right. More on that in . And is a film that picks up right after the finale, so definitely watch it afterwards.
